Astronomical Technology

Early technologyAt the Institute for Astronomy, we are playing a leading role in developing the technology that makes new scientific discoveries possible.  There are four areas in which UH astronomers and engineers are pushing observational astronomy beyond its current boundaries:

New Telescope Projects

Special-purpose telescopes that might be built in the future.

Instrument Development

Electronic cameras and spectrographs for the telescopes on Mauna Kea and Haleakala.

Detector Development

Ultra-sensitive mega-pixel CCD arrays for detecting light and infrared radiation.

Adaptive Optics

Overcoming the image blurring that is caused by Earth's atmosphere
